Murrayâs general store was exactly thatâgeneral. He had everything in it, from sugar and coffee beans and flour to nails and door hinges and cloth and lace.
Katrina weaved through the shelves, looking at the material Murray had told her had come in that morning.
âI really like this,â she said, fingering a roll of blue cotton.
âItâs beautiful,â Dory said. She had offered to go shopping with Katrina for material for her wedding dress. Katrina wasnât used to such kindness but it felt good to have someone who seemed to care.
âItâs the same color as his eyes,â Katrina said.
Dory glanced up at her. âHe does have striking eyesâ¦â
Her sentence trailed off at the end and Katrina looked up at her, frowning.
âWhat?â she asked.
Dory shrugged. âNothing. Itâs sweet seeing you two together. Are you serious about him, though? Serious about getting married?â
Katrina hesitated a moment before nodding.
âI am, yes.â
âThat wasnât very convincing,â Dory said.
Katrina took a deep breath. âThis is all happening very sudden. Itâs getting to me a little. Edward and I have spent time together and itâs been greatâitâs not hard to see that heâs a good man. But what can I really know about him in such a short time?â
And what could he possibly know about her? He had been baring himself to her, laying his heart and soul on the table, and she had been nothing but closed off and distant from him. She hated being like that when he was willing to love her with such reckless abandon if only she would let him in. She couldnât bear the thought of hurting him, though, and if they came for her, his heart would be broken.
âYou know the important things about him,â Dory said. âThat heâs a good man, that heâll care for you and love you. If you feel the same about him, you have the rest of your lives together to learn the rest about each other. Russ and I knew very little about each other when we got married but he is a good man. We still donât know nearly enough about each other. We have all the time in the world to find out.â
Katrina nodded. What Dory was saying was true, she knew it. It just wasnât that easy for her. How did you trust when you couldnât be trusted? How could you love when it could be ripped away?
Katrina walked around to the next shelf. She passed the window that looked out onto the main road. She glanced out at the people on foot, walking by to wherever they were going. She knew most of them by now. Carson Valley was a small town and it hadnât taken Katrina long to get to know everyone who lived there, save for one or two people who kept to their homes and secluded themselves.
In the distance, someone caught her eye. A tuft of black hair, a slight limp, broad shoulders that sloped just a little. Katrina stopped breathing. It couldnât be⦠Caspian?
She closed her eyes and shook her head.
